Third Update of April 2019 – An overview of last week’s Energy news

It was a quiet week for UK energy news. I have included a couple of relevant charts below. The first (from World Bank) shows UK energy levels compared with Germany and France. UK decline matches onset of global recession.

The second chart from Guardian/Carbon Brief shows UK carbon emissions decline tracking decline in energy.

Thursday – 18th April

• UK shift towards LNG for imported gas (versus pipeline). Q1 2018: 8 tankers. Q1 2019: 41 tankers.

• Solar Power Portal describes growth in solar power. Still not economic at domestic scale but growing from New Build policy. More economic for larger rooftops.

• Article describes the case for hydrogen in heating and transport. UK currently has 20 hydrogen fuelling stations accessible to the public for vehicles. Growth requires increase in vehicles. Vehicles require fuel points.

Saturday – 20th April

• Cruise ship industry seeing fuel shift from diesel to LNG.

Sunday – 21st April

• Guardian article covers the implications of zero-carbon goals. It makes the point that production of cement creates CO2 as well as agriculture. Greenhouse gas emissions problem isn’t just about energy.
